DIY Sparkly Tote Bag
Want a showstopping tote bag that’s easy, affordable, and totally unique? In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you how to turn a basic $5 Hobby Lobby tote into a glittery, vintage-inspired masterpiece using fabric Mod Podge, a funny tea towel, and loads of bling—no sewing required!
Perfect for gifts, craft fairs, or just treating yourself, this project is beginner-friendly but looks professionally done.
Let’s dive in!
Supplies You’ll Need
✔ Plain canvas tote bag (I used a $4.99 one from Hobby Lobby)
✔ Fabric Mod Podge (regular Mod Podge won’t work as well!)
✔ Funny tea towel or fabric (mine says “Oh, you use a wine stopper?”)
✔ Scissors (sharp ones make fussy-cutting easier)
✔ Rhinestone trim (Hobby Lobby’s Robert Stanley brand is my fave)
✔ Stickles glitter glue (Mercury Glass and Diamond are perfect)
✔ Hot glue gun (or fabric glue if you’re patient)
✔ Printed vintage images (optional—I used pinup girls from books)
Step 1: Prep Your Tote & Cut Out Your Design
- Insert cardboard inside the tote to prevent glue seepage.
- Cut out your tea towel design with sharp scissors. I fussy-cut my vintage lady, leaving no white edges.
- Trim any text or accents separately—I cut out the phrase “Oh, you use a wine stopper?” in individual lines for a polished look.
💡 If using paper images (like vintage pinups), fabric Mod Podge works on paper too—just seal it well!
Step 2: Mod Podge Your Design Onto the Tote
- Apply a thin layer of fabric Mod Podge to the back of your fabric cutout.
- Press it onto the tote, smoothing out wrinkles.
- Seal with another layer of Mod Podge on top (this adds shine and durability).
- Let dry completely (about 30 minutes).
Why Fabric Mod Podge? It’s thicker, washable (though I don’t recommend tossing this in the laundry), and won’t peel like regular Mod Podge.
Step 3: Add Rhinestone Trim for Glam
- Measure and cut rhinestone trim to frame your design. I used three rows along the bottom edge of my pinup’s dress.
- Hot glue it down (fabric glue is technically better, but hot glue works in a pinch!).
- Add extra bling—I glued tiny rhinestones to her shoes and hat for extra sparkle.
If your trim frays, dab on Fray Check or clear nail polish.
Step 4: Elevate It with Stickles Glitter Glue
- Outline your design with Stickles (I used Mercury Glass for a vintage vibe).
- Highlight details—I traced the flowers on her dress and the text for extra pop.
- Let dry for 1+ hour (don’t touch it—glitter glue smudges easily!).
Why Stickles? It’s fine-tipped, ultra-sparkly, and dries flexible—perfect for fabric!
Step 5: Final Touches (Optional but Fun!)
- Attach a wine glass keychain (because why not?).
- Add checkered ribbon or paint along the top edge for contrast.
- Seal the entire tote with another Mod Podge layer for extra protection.
Boom! You’re Done!
Now you’ve got a custom, sell-worthy tote that’s equal parts sassy and sparkly. This project is perfect for:
- Gifts (who wouldn’t want this?!)
- Craft fairs (I’ve sold these for $35+!)
- Personal use (prepare for compliments at the grocery store 😉)

FAQs
