Art Book File Box
Stripes, 3D Harlequin Diamonds, UV Resin Glasses & Rhinestones
This live tutorial takes a plain wood file box from Goodwill and turns it into a fully decorated storage piece — perfect for cut-and-collage books, art supplies, or a collection of family recipes. The audience voted on the design live (options included a Henry David Thoreau quote with a picture frame, a Form Flex cherub mold, and a funky pop art lady with bedazzling), and the funky lady won by a landslide.
The box starts with freehand multi-color stripes on the front using DecoArt Turquoise Blue and Calypso Blue mixed together, plus navy for shading. No tape, no measuring — just freehand lines pulled straight out from behind the image. A funky lady postcard from a Temu multi-pack goes on the front with Fast Grab tacky glue, and then the bedazzling begins.
The glasses get 3mm Crystal AB rhinestones around the frames, then UV resin fills the lenses to make them look like real glass. The UV resin kit from Amazon includes two bottles and a pen-size UV light, but a full-size UV flashlight ($6.99 on Amazon) works better for quick 6-second curing. Once the resin is cured, those glasses look completely real — and the resin also locks the rhinestones in place permanently.
The harlequin diamonds on the sides use the Essential Stencil diamond pattern (discount code SISTERHOOD) as a pencil template. The shading technique is the standout lesson here: navy blue applied in a comma-curve motion (not straight up and down) along one edge of each diamond creates a dramatic 3D pop effect. Then 6mm gold hematite rhinestones go between each diamond point for sparkle.
The interior gets painted in a warm sunset-orange using Painted Sky Paint's Tuscan Toffee — an Arizona-based small business whose colors are inspired by Arizona sunsets. The double-loaded brush technique blends two warm tones together for a natural gradient. This interior color ended up being the perfect complement to the teal exterior, and the idea came from the audience live on camera.
Other details include Stickles red glitter glue on the lips (applied last — takes an hour to dry and will smear if you touch it), 5mm Crystal AB rhinestone trim around the image, rhinestone earrings suggested by a viewer, and Liquitex High Gloss Varnish as the final sealer applied with a super soft brush. There's also a warning about diamond painting sealer getting gummy over cardstock — stick with Liquitex for paper-based projects.
Whether you're storing collage books, recipe cards, or art supplies, this project turns a $3 thrift store find into something that almost makes you not want to fill it with anything because it looks too good empty.
